Welcome back for another Dance Moms recap! Episode 3 is called “Return of the Minis”. Based on the preview, it’s sure to be a drama filled episode so let’s get started!
We start out in the studio this time! The elite team moms come in to find the mini moms sitting in the bleachers. They all go and greet them and pretend like they’re happy to see them. They start catching them up on all the drama that’s been happening the last few episodes, recapping Abby’s walk out last week.
Abby finally walks into the studio but she’s walking in with a walker. All the moms roll their eyes wondering what she’s done this time. Abby had some kind of surgery on her leg. She starts telling them the story about it and you can tell she’s exaggerating some of the details, but she wouldn’t be Abby Lee Miller if she didn’t.
They start pyramid and it’s revealed that Nia Frazier has strep throat. Abby introduces the newest mini her name is Lilliana Ketchman. Her mom is a psychologist, which should be interesting with all these crazy moms. Maybe she’ll be able to give them the counseling they need.
Abby decides to do things a little differently this week and starts at the top of the pyramid with Nia!! It is very rare that Nia gets above the bottom so that’s awesome! Beneath her is Kalani Hilliker, then Kendall Vertes, JoJo Siwa is beneath her, and last on the pyramid is Brynn Rumfallo.
The minis have also made it onto the pyramid finally! Areana Lopez is at the top of the mini’s pyramid. Next is Alexus Oladi, then Peyton Evans, underneath her is Elliana Walmsley, and finally, Lilliana is at the bottom since she’s the newest member. They’re doing a number called “Cali Cuties”. The theme of the dance is a beauty pageant and each girl is vying for the crown. This is a test to see who’s going to be the Maddie Zeigler of the minis. The person Abby chooses will get to be the one who receives the crown in the dance.
The elite team is doing a Prince tribute this week to a number called “Purple Fame”. Jessalynn offers to get the girl in touch with someone who used to dance with Prince so the girls can understand who they’re doing a tribute to. Kendall and Nia are doing a duet that’s a tribute to Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. JoJo and Brynn also have a duet together this week. Ashlee expresses how nervous she is about this because her and Jessalynn do not get along.
While the girls practice, the moms discuss how the last time the girls did a tribute to Michael Jackson it totally fell flat because the girls didn’t really know who Michael Jackson was. They go on to talk about how Abby keeps trying to do these tributes to people who were before their girls’ time. Brynn reinforces this by saying she doesn’t know who Prince is because she was born in 2003.
JoJo and Brynn’s dance is called Mirror Image. The two of them are very opposite dancers. While JoJo has a big personality, her technique needs work. Brynn is the exact opposite, great technique but not very good at letting her personality show through her dancing. Their mothers start discussing how this could be good for the two of them since they are not exactly the best of friends. Flashback to Ashlee and Jessaylnn screaming and cursing at each other. The moms all think that Abby put Brynn and JoJo together since Ashlee and Jessalynn are such enemies and she wants to see them fight.
Holly and Jill are very happy with Nia and Kendall’s dance. Nia absolutely idolizes Beyoncé so she’s very excited to be getting to portraying her in the dance. She just wishes she wasn’t sick with strep so she can give it more. Jill hopes that Nia gets better soon because she doesn’t want Nia being sick to ruin things for Kendall. It IS Kendall’s year after all.
The minis start practicing their dance with Gianna Martello. They all talk about who should get the crown. This leads the mini moms to start talking about who will get the crown. Alexis’ mom, Tiffany, is clearly hoping for her daughter to be the Maddie of the team. She wants her daughter to lead the team just like Maddie did. This causes Areana’s mom, Sari, to start talking about how Areana is actually Abby’s favorite and she’ll get the crown. The moms then go into the parking lot, which is where all the big fights go down these days, to argue about whose daughter is better. Sari and Tiffany start cursing and screaming in each other’s faces while the other moms beg them to stop saying that they should be acting like a team and not fighting each other. I’m pretty sure at this point it’s no longer about whose daughter is going to be Maddie, but which one of the moms is going to get to be the next Melissa.
The next day the moms try to provoke Tiffany into starting up again, but she seems to have developed a brain overnight and realized that fighting with the mom is just going to hurt her daughter so she won’t play ball with them. The minis continue to practice their dance and they each get to pretend like they’ve won the crown and do a wave. This is another test to help Abby decides who will get the crown.
Jessalynn’s friend, Lindsley who used to work with Prince arrives to meet with the girls. The elite team moms use this to get Abby to stop focusing on the minis and focus on their girls again. Abby shoos the minis to another room and has the girls do the dance for Lindsley. She stops them and says the dance is too boring and starts giving them advice on how to make the dance better. Abby, never one to be outshined, chimes in and gives them advice too.
Later, seeing Abby being nice for once, Nia gets the courage to ask Abby if she could do her duet with Kendall another week when she’s feeling better. She really likes this dance and wants to do her best at it. Abby surprisingly is nice about it and agrees to let her pull out of it. All of the moms are super supportive of Nia choosing to not do the dance. Now let’s just take a moment to consider if it was Brynn who decided not to do the dance because she wasn’t feeling good. How do you think that one would go down? So, Kendall asks if she can do the duet with Kalani instead of puling the dance. Abby agrees but she decides to change the dance all together because the dance she had in mind was for Nia and Kendall specifically. Kira immediately starts to complain that there’s not enough time for them to learn this dance, instead of appreciating the fact that her daughter has a duet this week. Typical mom stuff.
Back to the mini moms, they’re once again debating whose daughter is getting the crown in the dance. They all seem to have banded together against Alexus’ mom. None of them think Alexus can do any special trick so she doesn’t deserve the crown. (Remember when Dance Moms was a fun show and the moms only ever insulted each other and left the girls out of it? Sigh… those were the days.) Tiffany decides to take it as a compliment that they’re all trash talking her kid because that must mean they’re really threatened by her. When she gets up to go check out the dance Peyton’s mom, Kerri, tells her she hopes she trips and falls on her face. (Best friends forever y’all!!!)
Tiffany then goes and asks Abby if the other moms are right about Alexus not having a special trick. The other mini moms see her talking to Abby and decide to storm in there and tell their side of the story. I’m guessing they’ve never watched this show before because we all know what happens to moms who go storming into the studio while the girls are rehearsing. The elite team moms sit on the side and enjoy watching someone else make a fool of themselves for once. Maybe they’ll start appreciating the minis more after this. We probably shouldn’t get our hopes up though. All of the mini moms starting fighting amongst each other and Kira comes running in to remind them that they’re interrupting the girl’s rehearsal so to cut it out.
Finally, we make it to the competition. Is it me or is this episode longer than usual? Just checked the channel guide and it’s an hour and a half this week… Great. So, Abby puts the mini team in a different room then the elite team. Alexus’ mom sticks her foot in her mouth and demands to be put in the same room that the elite team is in. She says that they gave up a lot to be on this show so they should get a spot in the same room as the elite mom. Abby says they have not earned it yet. Jill then decides to butt in and tell her that it takes 5 years to earn a spot on that room. I guess she’s forgotten how she walked in 5 years ago with a spot in the room demanding solos for Kendall, then left for the Candy Apples when she didn’t get them, then came crawling back and demanded a spot again for Kendall. Maybe that was just a dream though and we’re the crazy ones. The other mini moms are not supportive of Tiffany’s tantrum. They want her to keep her trap shut because she’s ruining everything for their team. They want their kids to get the training, they could care less about what room they’re getting ready in. They say that this week, probably because it’s Tiffany who’s complaining, but I seem to remember Kerri having a similar argument with Abby last season. Maybe I’m just crazy again though. I’m pretty sure they’re also really happy that everyone is against Tiffany right now and she’s getting yelled at by Abby.
After the fight the elite moms are all smiles while Abby complains about the mini moms to them. Jill talks about how the mini moms just can’t stand having to split Abby’s attention with them. Ummmmm have the elite moms NOT been complaining about that same thing the whole episode? No? Ok that must just be me then. Moving on, all of the mini moms basically tell Tiffany that she’s an idiot for going against Abby and she should just have shut up and gotten her daughter ready for the dance.
Abby has the girls run their numbers again before the performances. Kalani and Kendall’s dance is kind of hard because they’re wrapping themselves up in a telephone cord. They’re pretty nervous about it. JoJo and Brynn seem to have gotten their dance together nicely. Jess and Ashlee even managed to get along for the dance. Unless the cameras were so focused on the drama with the mini moms that they skipped over it.
Kalani and Kendall go on for their duet. They manage to pull it off without dropping the cord. It looked really good. Brynn and JoJo go on after them. There’s really no denying that Brynn’s technique is sharper than JoJo’s, but JoJo also had bigger movements then Brynn. Hopefully it does well anyways.
After the duets go on, it’s time to decide which mini gets the crown. Their moms have been waiting for this all week. All the girls get to practice wearing it again. Areana gets the crown in the end making all the mini moms except Alexus’ happy. Elliana ends up getting a special role in the end where she is a bitter pageant loser who spends the whole time making fun of the girl who gets the crown.
The minis do their dance and it’s absolutely adorable. It makes you wonder how they ended up so cute when their mothers are such terrors. Next up the elite team goes out. They do a great job with their tribute to Prince. All the moms agree it was much better than the Michael Jackson tribute was.
It’s time for awards! Brynn and JoJo place first place for their duet in the preteens category. In teen duets Kendall and Kalani also place first place! The minis also get a first place for their dance. If the elite team can manage a first place for their dance that’s a clean sweep for team Abby Lee. Something that rarely happens anymore. Unfortunate they only place second, which according to Abby, “second is the first to lose.”
After awards the whole team goes outside to argue about the results. Alexus’ mom says that her daughter stole the show. All the moms, mini and elite, call her out and tell her she shouldn’t be so cocky. Abby agrees with them. This causes another heated discussion with all the moms, as the dancers stand there awkwardly probably wishing that they had different mothers at the moment. Eventually everyone walks off leaving the mini moms alone. Presumably so they can have another argument this time without innocent children having to listen.
The mini moms then all talk about how they all need to be team players. They all look at Tiffany to see if she’s willing to get with the program and do this. One thing you got to give her credit for is she is totally honest. She tells the moms she’s here for her daughter not to be a team player and she’ll do anything she has to do to get her daughter to be the next Maddie. The moms get irritated with her and walk away ending the episode.
For next week’s preview it looks like the mini moms might start banding together, which is good. Except they’re banding against the elite moms which is bad. It wouldn’t be Dance Moms without the drama though.
Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for next week’s Dance Moms recap. Don’t forget to let me know your thoughts in the comments!
