Season 2 Episode 5 – A Big Surprise
Air date: September 20, 2016

Hello Everyone!

Wow another week has flown right by and its time for another recap! I hope everyone is enjoying the recaps so far and I am loving the conversations and comments!

Engaged after less than a month of courting? SIGN ME UP

In this episode Jeremy enlists the help of Jessa & Ben to help him surprise Jinger with a visit. We find out he saw her two days prior when she and her parents went to visit him in Laredo, Texas. Wow a whole two days have passed and clearly the withdrawals have started. Jeremy has Jessa pick up Jinger to go for lunch at a local restaurant called Tacos for Life. Jessa has Jinger fill her in on her Laredo trip and tries to drag out their lunch to allow Jeremy enough time to come and surprise her. Ben picks up Jeremy from the airport and they call Jim Bob and ask him to meet them at a local jewelry store that each courting couple and also Jim Bob and Michelle have chosen their engagements rings from. They discuss how going to this jeweler is a tradition in their family.

Jim Bob meets up with the two boys and Jeremy starts to go through the selection of engagement rings, we then find out they have been courting for less than 4 weeks. Yikes this is really is moving very fast and Jim Bob surprisingly doesn’t seem as uncomfortable with the ring shopping as he was in Laredo, just two days prior he was telling Jeremy and Jinger to not look at rings at the pawn shop. Must’ve had a change of heart over the weekend. Jeremy shows the jeweler a style he has in mind and how convenient the ring he likes just so happens to be her exact size. He buys the ring. Which gives us a hint that their engagement will be happening very soon. Jeremy and Ben leave the jeweler and head to the restaurant, they run into some mild traffic, except it didn’t look like there was much, they had to throw some drama in somewhere I guess. Jeremy had already arranged with Jessa to speak to the restaurant to allow Jeremy to deliver her plate of food for her. Jeremy delivers the food and Jinger looked at him, then looked away and did a double take and realize it was Jeremy, she gave him a hug and said babe like 30 times. Ben stood there staring at them and wound up eating Jinger’s food, classic.

Jinger realizing the creepy waiter is actually Jeremy!

After the have a double date Jessa suggests the courting couple join Joy and a few of the brothers while they visit a Go Kart park. Everyone`s extreme competitive sides all come out and the race is on! I didn’t think being super competitive was a quality the Duggar clan would encourage, but hey maybe this lets the kids blow off some steam! Jeremy is trying to beat Jedediah and Jeremiah comes out and waves the checkered flag which Jed thought that meant stop so he lost the lead and somehow Jinger won. The gang then hops into some bumper boats and Jinger and Jeremy share a romantic bumper boat ride which was short lived because all the siblings decided to hose them down with water soakers attached to their boats, this wasn’t just a mild soaking, these two were drenched and had to escape the boats because the rest of the family were relentless and wouldn’t stop. Jinger seemed upset by it all and thank God girl wasn’t wearing a white tee shirt! Defrauding averted! So far we learned that Jinger and Jeremy are already prime examples of unhealthy co-dependence and will soon be engaged and the other Duggar kids were probably sick of hearing them say BABE every other word so they figured a good old fashion hosing was appropriate for these two love birds who are clearly giving off some sexual tension vibes and of course cold water stops the impure thoughts for sure!

Jessa and Ben have their friend Flame and his wife come visit them from St. Louis. Flame is a Christian Rapper and him and Ben connected somehow (probably through TLC) and became fast friends. Last season Ben and Jessa went to St. Louis to visit Flame at a recording studio and Ben hopped on the mic and made a fool of himself and I’m still recovering from the second hand embarrassment. Flame and his wife want to get a taste of the country life and Ben and Jessa for sure deliver. Ben decides to do a good old southern cook out for their guests. Ben busts out his new bbq and dumps a bunch of charcoal in the bottom and dumps some fluid on it and doesn’t really understand the instructions and it seems like the kid had no idea what he was doing. After a commercial it appears they figured it out and got the charcoals lit.. I’m guessing a camera man stepped in to prevent Ben and his friend Flame being burned alive.

Jessa and Ben then take their friends’ to the Duggar compound to meet the clan and see how they live and work. Jessa puts her siblings’ on the spot and asks them to do an impromptu music show. Some of the kids grab their instruments and perform. Michelle is hovering and trying her best to appear on camera. I’ve noticed her and Jim Bob are slowly creeping back in to be on camera more often. The previous season they were barely involved and now it seems like were watching 19 kids and counting again… under a new title. I honestly could do without seeing Jim Bob and Michelle, you can tell they are desperate for attention. Any who Ben decides to show Flame how the Duggar men earn their living, Flame doesn’t have any work clothes so they venture to the large closet the entire Duggar men share and choose him some work clothes and even give him a cowboy hat.

Flame normally dresses the part of a rapper so he is definitely out of his comfort zone with the outfit he is now wearing. They get Flame to go inside some heavy machinery and let him operate it and try it out and see how the Duggar men work. It seemed kind of dangerous to just let this city boy run loose on heavy machinery but hey anything to make the show exciting. I felt a little uncomfortable with this entire scene, its like they took some city boy rapper and dressed him all country and made him work on their equipment it all seemed like they were making fun of Flame, I just didn’t understand what they were trying to accomplish but they made him look foolish. It was all just bizarre and I felt like it was getting close to being racist, I know I sound sensitive but it just seemed a little much! Meanwhile while this was all going down Jessa, Jana and Crystal (flame’s wife) go out to the garden and gather some vegetables and Jessa gets scared because there were some crickets in the garden. She admits she tries to be all country but shes terrified of bugs… yawn. That was all we saw for Flame and Crystal’s Country Adventure and now its time to head back to St Louis and probably recover from being put through the ropes of the Duggar’s country ways.

I am side eyeing TLC for this entire scene

That was it for the episode. I liked that it wasn’t all about Jeremy and Jinger, they’re extreme pace of courting and their constant BABE talk and crazy eyes was getting to be a little much. You can tell TLC is really just throwing together anything to make an episode. I feel like this show is becoming very staged and scripted (more than before) and put together to form full episodes. I guarantee we will start seeing more Jim Bob and Michelle, little by little they are becoming more prevalent on the show. The sneak peak for next weeks episode is Ben is hosting a Youth Outreach football game. This should be good haha.

Thanks for reading my recap, what did you guys think of the show, did anyone actually watch it lol?

  2. Jennelle's next Endorsement Deal says:

Yeah, I haven’t been able to catch up on watching episodes myself, do these recaps are a life saver! I am SO disappointed that Jim Bob and Michelle are having as much camera time as it sounds like they are. I honestly might delete the trip to Laredo from my DVR, I don’t want to see Jim Bob be is normal self. I really wish one of these kids, like the grown ass twins, run away from the clan and actually lead an independent and, *GASP*, single life! They’re in their late 20s, leave the nest already!

  3. Confessionsofabathtubshitter/Danika says:

Love the comments! Yeah I’ve noticed gradually an increase in Jim Boob and Michelle on the TV. Its so shady like they cancelled 19 kids cause people were pissed with them and Josh and now basically TLC is trying to pepper them in. Michelle is the worst for trying to grab screen time you can see her over the top facial expressions and its just sad. Yes statistically at least one kid would be gay and that’s totally cool and I’d love for that because then maybe these people will change. But they seem so stuck in their ways it may not happen. I’m hoping the show improves. Its just all fluff and filler. I imagine Jinger and Jeremy marrying will drum up some good tv lol

  4. Kallie says:

Jinger seems like a clingy high school girlfriend. I wish they would have counted how many times she actually said “babe”
